Comparing Isotope properties? Please Help!?
Isotope means 'same place' and isotopes occupy the same place on the periodic table of elements because they react the same chemically. The isotopes have the same number of protons in their nuclei and therefore the same number of orbiting electrons (that can be shared in chemical reactions). The isotopes differ in the number of neutrons in their nuclei which are neutral and do not affect chemical reactions. Because of the slight difference in atomic weight, isotopes may be separated by diffusion or by centrifuges, etc. The stability (and radioactivity) of isotopes may also differ because of the difference in the number of neutrons.
