My pc won't detect my wireless mouse and keyboard?

My pc has trouble detecting my mouse and keyboard. I try using a bran new and old school mouse and keyboard. I can't change the settings or fix the wireless setting for my mouse because I can't move from the desktop. I know I should take it in for repair. I rather try to do anything to fix it before I end up spending a lot of money to format my pc.
