MLA citation for persuasive research paper?

I have a question about in-text citation. Two of my sources are written by the same author, 13 years apart. When paraphrasing or quoting, it looks really choppy to have (Cooper 1993, 15) and something like (Cooper 2006, 7). Is that the correct way to do it, or can someone offer me any alternatives that follow MLA guidelines?
