Promiscuity: ual empowerment for women but degrading for a man?

Some of the feedback I've been getting from people around me when I talk about possibly becoming promiscuous is that it would give me a bad rep. But when I bring up the subject that the women my age (30's) have been promiscuous I hear stuff like they were "just bettering themselves for a future mate" or "exercising their right to choose who they sleep with" and stuff like that. What the hay? Did things flip in the last few years and now the guy is looked down on that does this stuff and not the girl? Shouldn't equality go for both es? All I've been getting at with these people is that if women have had the chance to sleep around than what's wrong with me doing it.
